Volunteer role / Communities

TERM: Immediate – June 30, 2027 (6–12 month rotating term, with option to extend) LOCATION: Remote (Toronto / Ontario focus) TEAM: Communities ROLE: 1–3 open volunteer positions working as part of our core moderation squad. Average of 45 min/week volunteer time. ABOUT The Toronto Housing Society (TOHS) is seeking community-minded Community Moderators to help steward Toronto Home Zone (THZ), one of Ontario’s largest active peer-to-peer rental networks. Our 150,000+ member Facebook group relies on active human moderation to keep illegal deposits, predatory pricing, rental scams, and toxic behavior out of our community space. As a Community Moderator, you will be on the front lines of protecting renters and housing providers, verifying posts against local housing laws, and keeping the group safe, respectful, and informative. This is a highly visible, high-impact volunteer role perfect for someone who cares deeply about tenant rights, online safety, and fair housing in Ontario. KEY DELIVERABLES + RESPONSIBILITIES You will work alongside fellow moderators, admins, and the Community Ops Director to execute the following core tasks: 1 / POST SCREENING & VETTING (70%) Review incoming rental listings, roommate searches, and housing requests against THZ community guidelines, Ontario Residential Tenancies Act standards, human rights codes, and voluntary rent caps. Review membership requests per our profile guidelines. 2 / DATA STEWARDSHIP & MOD PANEL LOGGING (15%) Maintain strict accuracy when logging approved, declined, and flagged listings in the internal TOHS Moderation Panel to help our tech team track housing market trends and scam patterns. 3 / CONVERSATION MONITORING & COMMUNITY POSTING (10%) Monitor public comment sections to answer basic questions, de-escalate conflicts, and enforce group rules. Periodically share or pin official operational updates, educational guides, and community engagement posts. 4 / INCIDENT LOGGING & MEMBER KUDOS (5%) Document member safety reports, scam alerts, and severe rule breaches for team escalation, while also highlighting positive member contributions and community support (kudos). (Note: This role focuses on direct group moderation and conversation management within the THZ Facebook group. You are not required to manage the external THZ Facebook Page or administrative settings). WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR - No Legal Expertise Required: You don't need to be an Ontario housing law expert on day one! Part of the joy of this role is the deep learning that comes from addressing the real, daily needs of renters and housing providers every day. Our internal Moderation Panel features built-in assistive tools and guided prompts to help direct your vetting decisions. - Reliable Facebook Account: Comfort using a stable, authentic Facebook profile to post and comment publicly within the group (you may use a dedicated secondary account, provided it fully complies with Facebook terms and carries no risk of platform removal). - High Standard of Digital Conduct: A commitment to maintaining thoughtful, respectful conduct across external online groups to safeguard both your profile stability and TOHS’s public trust. - Attention to Detail: Precision when reviewing rental terms, identifying suspicious listings, and logging data in our internal tools. - De-escalation & Empathy: Strong emotional intelligence, de-escalation skills, and a trauma-informed mindset when dealing with members in stressful housing situations. - (Nice to Have) Lived experience in Ontario’s rental market—as a renter, housing provider, social worker, or tenant advocate. EXPRESSION OF INTEREST How do you approach community care? In your expression of interest, please share a brief written reflection on ONE of the following options: 1 / De-escalation & Care: Tell us about a time you successfully de-escalated a conflict, managed a tense situation, or enforced boundaries with empathy—whether online, at work, or in your local community. 2 / Community Analysis: Share a link to an online community, group, or platform whose safety, moderation, or culture you admire, and tell us 1–2 practices they use that you'd love to bring to Toronto Home Zone.
